Diverse Snacks - OSHC

This hands-on session will give participants the skills and knowledge to create snacks that reflect the cultural diversity of families and staff in their service and community. Discussion will focus on food practices and taboos and traditions associated with culture and religion. Participants will prepare and cook a variety of diverse, tasty and nutritious snacks and learn how to source new recipes and ingredients.
Topics to be Covered
- Importance of food in relation to cultural identity
- Incorporating family practices in the preparation and provision of snacks for OSHC children
- Sourcing recipes and ingredients at local shopping centres
Session Outcomes
For participants to:
- Develop a greater understanding of the importance of providing culturally diverse and nutritious snacks
- Prepare a diverse range of finger foods and snacks
- Develop an action plan to include diverse food snacks in the program

Expanding Services Understanding
of Diversity - ISF/PSFO

Empowering educators to expand their reflection of diversity with an inclusive and relevant approach is a fundamental aspect to the role of an ISF and PSFO. This interactive session focuses on how to empower services to incorporate diversity holistically within their programs. Participants will learn how to support these services to further develop their understanding of diversity.
Topics to be Covered
- Define and explore the impact on service delivery in implementing a tokenistic approach to addressing cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD)
- Strategies to positively engage services to reflect the wider community into children’s programs

- Identify strategies to constructively discuss tokenistic approaches and work towards reducing occurrence within services

Transition Statement Series: Meaningful Communication with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families

Understanding culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) families’ views about their child’s learning is vital in supporting children’s successful transition to school. This session will provide tools and strategies to ensure that communication is meaningful for both CALD families and children’s services professionals during the transition time and when writing the Transition Statement.
Topics to be Covered
- Valuing the input and voice of CALD families
- Where to source information regarding cultural backgrounds of families
- Communicating with families when there is no shared language
- Creating a common understanding of children’s learning and the
transition processes

For participants to:
- Be able to effectively include CALD children and families in the transition to school processes
- Gain knowledge of available resources required to facilitate the
transition processes

This session will explore positive and responsive ways to market play, along with providing opportunities to explore different cultural perceptions and values of learning.

- How educators foster learning through providing play experiences
for children

Creating Culturally Reflective Resources
Developing play resources which reflect the cultural diversity of children leads to learning environments that are responsive to individual children. These opportunities assist in deepening the connections between services and families. In this interactive training session, participants will learn about and create culturally reflective resources.

- Explore the value of providing play materials that are reflective of children’s culture and identity
- Accessing local and natural materials to explore cultural diversity in children’s programs
- Use of play resources that are culturally reflective
