Member Forum: Working with Bilingual Workers – making the links between home and learning environments to support children’s sense of belonging

“Children’s sense of belonging and their learning are challenged when there is little connection between family, their community and their early childhood setting” (Early Years Learning Framework, page 17).

fka Children’s Services is funded to provide Casual Bilingual Workers in Early Childhood Services to support children from CALD backgrounds. This session has been developed to provide a fkaCS members with insight into the value of bilingual support and strategies that will maximise the effectiveness of that support. Utilising bilingual workers strengthens connections and supports Early Childhood Services build meaningful relationships with children and their families from CALD backgrounds.

This forum will explore the role of the bilingual workers, and provide examples of culturally competent practices through an interactive panel of service providers, Casual Bilingual Workers and Children’s Services Consultants.

fka Children’s Services invites fkaCS members to visit our onsite library and view our many new multicultural books and resources available for members to borrow.

Topics to be covered:

  • The role of the Casual Bilingual Worker
  • Benefits and challenges when working with Casual Bilingual Workers
  • Multi faceted partnership approaches to communication with CALD families
  • Factors that impact on CALD families being connected to Early Childhood Services
  • Strategies that support effective communication with families and respect  the families cultural background

 

fkaCS Members attending this forum will:

  • Understand and develop skills for effective working with bilingual workers
  • Learn strategies that support effective communication and information sharing with families while respecting the families cultural background
  • Understand the role of a Casual Bilingual Worker
