These Modules are an extension of Supporting Children Learning English as a Second Language in the Early Years (Nov 2009), a discussion paper supporting the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (2009), developed in partnership with Dr Priscilla Clarke and Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).
Each module incorporates the eight practice principles for learning and development and promotes the five outcomes of the frameworks.
Topics to be covered:
- Who are second language learners?
- The importance of maintaining the first language
- Identity and self esteem
- Factors affecting the learning of English as an Additional Language (EAL)
- Stages of second language development
- Oral language development
- Developing English in an inclusive environment
- The role of early childhood professionals
- Partnerships with families
Learning Outcomes for participants to:
- Understand some of the issues for young children learning EAL
- Understand the importance of maintaining the first language
- Understand some of the factors that are important in fostering self esteem and a sense of belonging
- Identify the stages of second language development in preschool children
- Develop strategies in partnership with families for supporting young EAL learners in inclusive environments
