Disability Series: Considering disability from a cultural perspective

Cultural perceptions of disability are unique to each family as they are framed by expectations and individual experiences. Supporting families who have a child with a disability can be complex, particularly where values and beliefs may differ. This session will assist participants to reflect on their experiences and enhance their awareness of effective inclusion.

Topics to be Covered

  • Exploration of the diverse cultural perceptions and values of disability
  • Ethical issues in relation to differing perceptions
  • Developing supportive relationships with families and educators
  • The voice of children with disabilities

Learning Outcomes for participants to:

  • Understand diverse cultural expectations in relation to disability
  • Enhance their awareness of the diverse values, practices and beliefs to inform their pedagogy
  • Demonstrate an engaged and collaborative approach to the care and education of children with a disability
