The NDIS has been described as being the most significant social reform in Australia since Medicare. With such a major change impacting on children with disability and/or developmental delay, what should educators know about the NDIS and what role do they also play in the scheme?
For the NDIS to be a success, it requires a commitment from everyone involved with young children and families. As a community we are being asked to shift the disempowering perceptions of disability and move towards a strengths-based social model – This is the intention of the NDIS.
Whist the NDIS provides a platform for the funding of disability supports in a way that empowers children with disability and their families, it also requires the whole of the community, including the early learning sector to embrace inclusive practice. We all have a key role to play!
fkaCS will be joined by guest speakers Sarah Riches (Manager Sector Development and Engagement) and Trish McIvor (NDIS Readiness Advisor) from ECIA VIC/TAS.
Sarah and Trish have been working closely with Early Childhood Intervention Services to navigate the NDIS as it progressively rolls out across Victoria and Tasmania. With many years of experience, Sarah and Trish both have a back ground in early childhood education and care as well as early childhood early intervention, as such they are uniquely placed to understand the complexity of the NDIS and how it can and should interact with mainstream services , such as early learning settings.
Both have a strong commitment to the vision of ECIA VIC/TAS and see the opportunity to engage in conversations and to participate in forums such as this, as a step towards fulfilling that vision. The following questions will be answered:
ECIA VIC/TAS is the peak body for early childhood intervention in Victoria and Tasmania. It represents numerous private, not-for-profit and for-profit early childhood intervention specialists and service providers throughout both states. As a peak body it provides advocacy, education and training, professional development, networking, resource development and daily operational and strategic support to the sector.
