Casual Bilingual Program

FKA Children's Services believes that all children have the right to maintain their first language and culture in early childhood programs and that the child’s first language provides the foundation for learning English as a second language.

Casual Bilingual Program

The Casual Bilingual Program was established in Melbourne in 1994. In 1996, the needs of rural Victoria necessitated the creation of bilingual support in Geelong and Shepparton. The Casual Bilingual Program now extends to all rural regions of Victoria to meet the growing needs of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse families. Our team of Bilingual Workers come from diverse backgrounds and bring with them a wide range of experiences. Within the Casual Bilingual Program, over 100 languages and dialects are spoken. Recruitment of Bilingual Workers who speak languages currently not available is an on going process. All endeavours will be made to find Bilingual Workers with the languages and cultures as needed. Professional development is regularly provided to all Casual Bilingual Workers to develop their skills in supporting diversity in Children's Services. It is important to note that the Casual Bilingual Workers are not qualified as interpreters and translators. They are not to be included as part of the child/staff ratio.
