Maintaining the First Language Level 2

Casual Bilingual Workers provide staff and families with the opportunity to communicate and extend open learning of ESL through 1st language maintenance. This session will further develop an understanding of the importance of 1st language and language rich play spaces.

Topics to be Covered

 

  • Exploring the benefits of being bilingual
  • Stages of and supporting children learning English as a 2nd Language
  • What is a ‘language’ rich play space

 

Session Outcomes

 

  • Develop confidence in supporting staff, children and families from CALD backgrounds
  • Understand and identify the principles of second language acquisition
  • Develop understanding of Casual Bilingual Workers role in supporting children, families and staff

The Art of Story Telling – Geelong

Throughout time many cultures have shared past accounts and traditions through story telling. Casual Bilingual Workers will be given the opportunity to explore different styles of story telling they may use when supporting children.

 

Topics to be Covered

 

  • The benefits of story telling
  • Creating stories from our daily experiences and lives
  • Creating and maintaining language rich environments

 

Session Outcomes

 

  • Explore practical ways of promoting language and literature
  • Develop confidence in story telling abilities
  • Gain an increased awareness of the types of resources that can be used to support children’s language development
